Path of Reason is auctioning a 16 x 20 inch canvas print of Giordano Bruno signed by the artist (me). All proceeds from this auction will be donated to the American Humanist Association (AHA) in an effort to help them meet their goal in the Appignani Million Dollar Challenge. Louis Appignani is a well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist from Miami, Florida, and current chairman and founder of Louja Realty Inc. He has pledged to match donations made to the AHA up to the amount of one million dollars. See the video of the announcement here.

With that being said, please keep in mind that any amount raised through this auction will be matched! Not only do you get the satisfaction of helping the cause of humanism but you also get a unique, one-of-a-kind signed print of original artwork depicting Giordano Bruno. The artwork is done in the style of traditional Greek Orthodox icons and is one in a series of five Unlikely Ikons. For information on the Unlikely Ikons click here.

From SecularHumanism.org :

Giordano Bruno is considered by many to be a martyr for science and by many more to be a martyr for free thought. Bruno was born in the town of Nola, located near Naples, Italy, in 1548. He was an outspoken youth and eventually became an outspoken Dominican monk. During his tenure as a Dominican, it was suggested that he had read some of the "forbidden works" of Desiderius Erasmus, and along with his unorthodox views of Christianity, this prompted the Catholic Church to issue an indictment of heresy against Bruno in 1578.

...In January, 1600, he was handed over to the Grand Inquisitor, was convicted, and turned over to the secular authorities who were required to carry out the sentence imposed by the Inquisition...On February 17, 1600, Bruno was led to Campo de Fiori, where he was burned at the stake, amongst the crowds visiting Rome for the Jubilee Year.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

His attitude of mind towards religious truth was that of a rationalist. Personally, he failed to feel any of the vital significance of Christianity as a religious system. It was not a Roman Inquisitor, but a Protestant divine, who said of him that he was "a man of great capacity, with infinite knowledge, but not a trace of religion."

Note From Artist - Traditionally in iconography, the cross held in a saint's hand symbolizes martyrdom. In this case, I have put a cross in Bruno's hand but upside-down to represent his martyrdom as a result of his opposition to the church and it's teachings. The book is representative of his many works. The particular images on the book are actual woodcuts taken from Bruno's, "Articuli centum et sexaginta adversus huius tempestatis mathematicos atque philosophos."

The Bruno icon is truly meant to be a "religious" icon for the irreligious. It is an image of inspiration to those willing to stand up for free thought even in the face of death.

...for quite some time at least. As you can see, I have not added much to my gallery here in ages. Partly due to the collapse and disintegration of certain "things" in my life. Regardless, I am happy to submit what is likely my final "Unlikely Ikon" and that is of Giordano Bruno.

I actually started this icon in the beginning of this year and have just recently mustered up the will to finish it. Now that this is completed I feel that I can finally "move on" in more ways than one. Anyways, thank you all for continuing to check out my artwork, for the favs, comments, etc. It is greatly appreciated always!

Once available (within the next few weeks) I will be auctioning off a signed canvas print to raise money for the American Humanist Association.

Check back soon for details!

I haven't been as active here at DA as much as I'd like because my website (www.pathofreason.com) has really been sucking up every free second I have.

I am feeling the need to kick out another Unlikely Ikon. Hopefully I'll be able to work it in to my schedule somehow. The next piece will depict a martyr of sorts.

If you're interested, check out what I've been doing with most of my free time at Path of Reason. Also, if you want to help support us but don't want to make a donation, please go to our Amazon.com Associate Store to buy your amazon.com items. We get a small percentage for items bought through our store. Click the pic below and put it in your favorites!
